Lesson 88 |

A special poppy |
Draw the flower as shown alongside. This special "feathered" poppy is a free interpretation from the "Meissen" style. Make a stencil if you are planning to repeat the design. Refer to lesson 43.
The
calyx will be painted in yellow and the petals in red.
Start with the calyx. Use a brush N°0. Each sepal is painted lengthwise with increasing pressure in the centre. Do not reload your brush, hence you will obtain a lighter shade as you continue to paint. Start from the left side and position your object vertically facing you. |
The larger symetrical sepals are painted one half at a time. Start with the borders inwards, hence the centre will be lighter than the borders. |
The
petals are painted in a base coat of pale red (yellow red) except for the
areas in contact with the sepals which are darker.
The brush stroke is as usual: apply the brush and increase the pressure as you move forward and release it as you terminate the stroke. The movement of the stroke is done in a wide S shape to give a general impression of flames. |

Prepare some green and some dark green for the leaves. Load your brush with green and pick up some dark green on the left side (in our example). Do not use dark green for the centre area of the leaf. The brush stroke is the same as for the petals explained earlier. |

Résult: The yellow red and the greens have lost some of their colour.

We shall start with the petals. Use a brush N°000 and paint the contour of each petal in yellow red at the periphery and in Pompadour red for the petals nearer the calyx. The brush stroke is similar as before.

Paint all the petal contours. Fill up a petal here and there with colour.

Retouch
the borders of the sepals in the same yellow to give more depth. Paint a
few veins in green starting from the base upwards. Increase the shade
under the turned sepal in green too. Retouch the leaves if necessary. |
